Abstract

We calculate the contribution of vector meson dominance todeeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering in the kinematicregion of the HERMES experiment. The results obtained show that this contributionis quite significant. Together with the fact that thereexist very striking left-right asymmetries for hadronsproduced in single-spin hadron-hadron collisions, these resultsimply that the single-spin azimuthal asymmetryobserved by HERMES cannot be simply regarded asa pure fragmentation effect.
