Abstract

Background: Non-technical skills (NTS) are social, cognitive and personal skills that canenhance staff nurses to carry out technical skills, tasks and procedures. Aim: The study aimedto assess contribution of non-technical skills on nurses' performance efficiency of nursing careprocess in Intensive Care Units. Design: Descriptive correlation research design was used inthe study. Setting: the study was conducted at El Mahala El-kobra General Hospital whichaffiliated to the Ministry of Health and Population. The subjects: all (N= 200) availablenurses at intensive care units who are working at the time of data collection were included inthe study. Tools: Data was collected by using two tools. 1) Nurses’ performance of nursingprocess observational checklist. 2) Non-technical skills of nurses' questionnaire. Results: Theresult showed that more than two- thirds (71.0%) of nurses had satisfied level in performingtotal technical skills and less than two -thirds (63%) of nurses had satisfied level in total non –technical skills. Conclusion: There was significant positive correlation between overallobserved nurses' technical skills and their overall non-technical skills. Recommendation:establishing specific unit policies, procedures and standards of nursing technical and nontechnicalskills, conducting training programs to cover all technical and non-technical skills,and integrate non-technical skills into the nursing curriculum.
