Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of how green chemicals and advanced materials contribute to the United Nations׳ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs aim to create a more equitable, prosperous, and sustainable world by 2030. The chapter emphasizes the importance of utilizing green materials in achieving these goals and showcases successful examples from various industries and initiatives. Green materials significantly support multiple SDGs by mitigating poverty, enhancing food security, improving human health and well-being, expanding access to clean water and sanitation, promoting affordable and clean energy, fostering sustainable industrial growth, and creating sustainable communities. They also contribute to responsible consumption and production, climate change mitigation, preservation of marine biodiversity, and protection of forests and ecosystems. The deployment of green materials is crucial for progressing towards the SDGs as it encourages the adoption of sustainable practices across the different sectors. By integrating eco-friendly materials into industries and embracing sustainable methodologies, several global concerns can be effectively addressed such as climate change, resource depletion, poverty, and environmental degradation. Green materials also play a significant role in promoting socio-economic aspects of the SDGs, including inclusive economic growth, decent work conditions, gender equality, quality education, reduced inequalities, and peace and justice. Governments, businesses, communities, and individuals are urged to prioritize the adoption of eco-friendly materials to maximize their impact on the SDGs and foster a more sustainable global environment. The widespread use of green materials can lead to significant advancements in achieving the SDGs and creating a more sustainable future for all.
