Abstract

ABSTRACTThe number of women farmers, in traditional male-dominated cultures, who contribute to household income is not well known. The study was undertaken to examine the contribution to household income by women producers of fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook F). Women earned an average profit of N199,467.03 (US$554.08), and N0.36 profit was earned on every naira invested. Women delivered 55.69% of total household income from pumpkin leaf production. Women were confronted by the challenges of water scarcity and high labor costs. Availability of inputs and access to credit are factors influencing the profit level of women growers. It appears that women are efficient pumpkin leaf growers and contribute significantly to household income.
