Abstract

Antigen stimulated cultures of spleen cells from normal chickens immunized with Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin (KLH) and Brucella abortus antigen (BA) show significantly increased proliferative responses in comparison with unstimulated cultures. In contrast, antigen stimulated spleen cell cultures from bursectomized-irradiated (Bx-X) agammaglobulinemic (Aγ) chickens immunized with both KLH and BA, react significantly to KLH, but not to BA (1). Spleens of Aγ chickens are depleted of bursal dependent (B) lymphocytes and contain predominantly thymic-dependent (T) lymphocytes (2). This suggests that the reaction to BA is dependent on intact B cell function.
