Abstract

The diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is illustrated with case studies and the condition is reconsidered with special emphasis on psychopathology. According to the author, the presence in these cases of a neurotic disorder sets the indication for a psychotherapy with psychodynamic or existential approach. Considering the frequent presence of chronic fatigue syndrome in ambulatory care settings and the risk of an evolution into a seriously handicapping condition, the importance of correct diagnosis and psychotherapeutic treatment is underlined.
