Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the potential contribution of the main farming activities for the development of the Northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul and identify alternatives of use of existing potential, to subsidize the definition of regional development strategies. The methodology adopted involves five fundamental moments: 1) to identify the structural productive activities; 2) assess the prospects for market overall; 3) analyse the competitive potential of the region in these markets in the face of competing regions; 4) analyze the technical characteristics of the activity and the organisation of its production chain in the territory; and 5) scale multiplier effect on the generating income in territory. Based on the results of this analysis, it was possible to identify the potential contribution to the development of the region that each activity currently has or can represent in the future.
