Abstract

Comparing the role of sport in the development of nationalism in Britain and France one is immediately struck by the diversity of forms of national feeling and the flexibility of sport in expressing such differences; the late nineteenth century saw the emergence of the ‘new nationalism’ based upon a potent cocktail of forces: better education and literacy combined with the rise of popular politics; the new racial theories of ‘the survival of the fittest’ nations based upon a crude social Darwinism; the massive growth of imperialism; and the increasing threat of German power in Europe. Looking at the role of militarism in sport, the difference in the nature of nationalism within France and the United Kingdom is striking. The lack of a very visible English nationalism makes it easy for the English to neglect the strength of national feeling in other parts of the United Kingdom.
