Abstract

Abstract The National Health Service (NHS) quasi-market established a conceptual and operational separation between purchasers of health services (district health authorities, health commissions, general practice (GP) fundholders in their role as purchasers of services) and the providers of those services (NHS Trust and private sector hospitals, community health service providers, GPs in their role as providers of services). It requires provision of health services to be governed by contracts between purchasers and providers. The research reported in this chapter considers what forms of contract between health authorities and providers are appropriate within the context of this quasi-market.
