Abstract
According to a 5-year multicenter study the hormonal contraceptive implant is highly effective and acceptable among Chinese women. In this study a total of 10718 women at 12 health centers and nearby subcenters throughout China were enrolled. These women were aged 30.2 years on average weighed 54.5 kg at enrollment and had at least one living child. The implants which consisted of six capsules containing a total of 216 mg of levonorgestrel were inserted at outpatient clinics at teaching hospitals medical colleges and research institutes in large urban centers. Overall a very low rate of insertion complications (4.7/10000 woman-years) attributed to careful training and supervision was found. In addition it was noted that 72% of the initial participants used the implant continuously for 5 years. The primary reason for removal or discontinuation was menstrual disturbance. Moreover the cumulative 5-year pregnancy rate was 1.5 pregnancies per 100 woman-years indicating that rates declined with age and rose with body weight.
