Abstract

The writer comments on experience with the Dalkon shield in response to a report on a series of 640 patients wearing Dalkon shield in which the pregnancy rate was 1.1%. In a period of 11 months 3 of the writers series of 10 patients became pregnant with the shield in situ. There was no nullipara in the series. The mean age of the patient was 27.5 years. The patients were selected from those who objected to the contraceptive pill because of side effects. Gynecological abnormality and pregnancy were excluded by careful history and examination. Only 1 removal was made on account of bleeding. Another removal was performed 7 months after insertion on account of lack of confidence in the method. The writer feels that in the absence of any large well authenticated trials performed in Australia so far a degree of scepticism to the claims of the manufacturer is warranted.
