Abstract

A 14-year-old girl came to the clinic requesting contraception. She had menarche at age 12 with regular heavy periods. She has no intermenstrual bleeding. She is currently on her period. Her medical history is quite complicated. At age 8 she had a seizure and was diagnosed with an arteriovenous malformation in her brain. She continued to have seizures and over the years several attempts to embolize the malformation have been made. Although she has not had a seizure in 2 years there is still a residual malformation in her brain. She does not have any neurological symptoms at this time. She is otherwise healthy and has had a boyfriend for 6 months. She is sexually active by choice using condoms but after a condom break several weeks ago she is interested in another method. Her family history is non-contributory. She does not smoke or use any alcohol. (excerpt)
