Abstract

According to his friend Hermogenianus, Augustine «defeated » the Academicians in the Contra Academicos. According to his personal opinion, the real achievement of the treatise is solely to have demonstrated that it is probable that the wise man has a share in truth and to have revived the hope of finding it. Augustine’s belief that New Academicians pretended to be sceptics, together with his concept of philosophy, provides the explanation for such a judgement.
