Abstract

The inclusive reaction 12C(p,p') at incident proton energies of 90 MeV and 200 MeV is investigated to determine whether the continuum spectra can be described in terms of a simple quasifree knockout model. Reasonable agreement is obtained at 200 MeV, irrespective of our choice of approximation to the half-shell proton-nucleon interaction. At 90 MeV, however, only the initial-energy prescription gives acceptable theoretical results. Realistic spectroscopic factors are extracted from the data, which further support the assumption that the quasifree knockout mechanism is an important component of the reaction leading to protons scattered into the continuum.
