Abstract
Two modes of continuous transformations were observed in the icosahedral AlCuFe quasicrystals. Quasicrystals in Al 65Cu 20Fe 15 transform towards a rhombohedral approximant; the transition is spatially uniform and gives rise to pure shifts of diffraction spots. On the other hand, quasicrystals in Al 60Cu 30Fe 10 tend to decompose into two different rhombohedral approximants via structural modulations mainly along the five-fold directions, leading to notable diffuse scattering and tweed contrast. The transformations can be interpreted in terms of phason strains.
