Abstract

The authors report an experimental trial to record cerebral blood flow (CBF) continuously by means of a thermal diffusion method using a Peltier stack. The authors performed the experiments after Carter's method and confirmed that a stable recording was possible. To calibrate the flow probe, they used CBF values obtained by the electrolytic method. The authors proved theoretically and experimentally that calibration of the flow probe is possible without knowing the CBF values at the time of cardiac arrest. The thermal diffusion method using a Peltier stack is a very useful method for monitoring CBF continuously, especially during neurosurgical operations. Many problems of cerebral hemodynamics should be solved by measuring CBF values by this method.
