Abstract

A method is described for the on-line analysis of micro liquid chromatographic effluents by an unchanged quadrupole mass spectrometer operating in the chemical ionization mode. This method of direct liquid introduction (DLI) LC/MS provides improved detection limits for drugs and their metabolites isolated from biological matrices. Full scan mass spectra from m/z 120 are possible from low nanogram samples. Microliter flow rates of the micro liquid chromatograph allow the economical use of deuterated eluants to determine the number of acidic hydrogens in a solute molecule and to investigate the nature of the ion molecule reaction(s) involved in the DLI method of LC/MS.
