Abstract

Cell retention and ethanol production using the flocculent bacterium Zymomonas mobilis NRRL B-12526 were studied in three bioreactor configurations. The flocculent growth characteristic of this strain and a special reactor design were combined to achieve relatively high cell concentrations in a continuous bioreactor for the conversion of glucose to ethanol.
