Abstract

The widespread integration of renewables into the power grid has presented some challenges for grid operators. Voltage and frequency regulation across distribution feeders in areas of high renewables penetration is an issue in many countries, and further effort to utilise inverters in a grid-supporting role is required. In this paper, a continuous control set model predictive control method is presented, allowing the inverter to provide active and reactive power regulation into the local grid through a filter. Its performance is validated utilising MATLAB Simulink, showing good transient response to grid conditions and curtailment of active power. Active power regulation is demonstrated through an increase in DC link voltage above nominal maximum power point voltage. Steady state performance shows low THD levels, with some additional THD present at curtailed power levels.
