Abstract

A Semi-Continuous Counter-Current Chromatographic Reactor-Separator (SCCR-S) has been used for the first time to carry out a biochemical reaction and product separation simultaneously. The continuous inversion of sucrose to glucose and fructose and the biosynthesis of dextran in the presence of the enzyme dextransucrase have been investigated. Sucrose conversions of up to 100% were achieved and product purities of up to 95% were shown to be possible. Substrate inhibition problems were overcome during the sucrose inversion due to the employment of the combined bioreactionseparation principle. Feed concentrations of up to 55% w/v sucrose were used.
