Abstract
Please accept my warmest greetings and best wishes as we begin 2011. There is great excitement and energy this year to continue to implement a number of high-priority initiatives that were reconfirmed or developed as part of the IEEE Signal Processing Society's most recent long-range planning (LRP) exercise during the 2010 International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) that was held in Hong Kong. As mentioned in earlier columns, a continuing driver for such plans is the provision of meaningful benefits to Society membership and greater engagement of the Chapters, students, and practitioners in the Society's affairs and services. Opportunities also continue to be explored on collaboration and partnership with colleagues in other fields of science and engineering, a number of which have provided the fundamental basis for signal processing during its genesis as a recognized and vibrant discipline and others that provide application opportunities that continue to motivate and energize innovations in our profession.
