Abstract

Abstract The Pennsylvania State University, Department of Health Education, after being designated as a provider of continuing education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), conducted a survey of a random sample of 1,000 Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES). The purpose of the survey was to determine continuing education preferences of CHES. The majority of the respondents possessed graduate degrees with about one-third working in a community setting, while approximately one-fourth reported working in the medical setting. Relative to continuing education addressing competencies listed in Responsibilities and Competencies for Entry-Level Health Educators, respondents identified programs in the area of evaluation as being of most interest. Respondents also indicated concern about lack of local programs, program cost, and availability of programs for CHES with advanced degrees. Suggestions for future assessments are provided.
