Abstract

Healthcare, healthcare systems, and the practice of nursing in complex organizations are constantly changing. Nurses are involved in a practice environment grounded in the spiritual-ethical, political, economic, legal, technological, educational, physical, and socialcultural dimensions of caring. Given today’s healthcare environment, nurses need to examine how the meaning of caring is related to and influenced by the organizational culture. The theory of bureaucratic caring provides direction and guidance for nurses to understand the way caring is lived and expressed throughout the hospital organization. In this theory, the meaning of caring is first differentiated by hospital units and second, integrated into an organizational structure.
