Abstract

The effectiveness and continuation rate of contraceptives were analyzed in a survey from July 1 1984 to July 1 1989 as part of the interdisciplinary Fertility Survey Slovenia 1989. A representative sample of 469 women 15-44 years old constituted 599 contraceptive-use intervals. The data were collected retrospectively by in-depth interviews. Continuation of contraceptive use was analyzed with a standard actuarial Cutler-Ederers life-table method for 1 year. Continuation rates were established by using a single decrement life-table and gross Tietze-Potter rates were calculated. The differences between the life-tables were revised with a log-rank test. P values 0.10). Age was associated with failure of coitus-dependent methods (P = 0.094) but not with discontinuation of these methods (P > 0.10). The highest contraceptive failure rate in coitus-dependent methods occurred in the 20-24 and the lowest in the 15-19 age group.
