Abstract
An early reference on continental drift by Joel Chandler Harris (1881) entitled The Origin of the Ocean has been overlooked by workers tracing the development of ideas on continental drift. This work offers a unique explanation for the drifting of the continents. The actual origin of this explanation predates 1881 by an indeterminate, but probably long, period of time.
