Abstract
The South-East Asian Journal of Medical Education (SEAJME) is the culmination of the SEARAME's vision to bring together medical educationists in the region to promote collaborative efforts toward uplifting the standards of medical education in the region and beyond through dissemination of knowledge. This journal will be the ideal platform to disseminate research findings and stimulate discussion among experts in the field. Information about Indian institutes offering Master of Public Health (MPH) programs was collected from the World Wide Web and from academic publications and institutional affiliations of the authors publishing in Indian public health journals
A similar search was conducted through the websites of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
Summary
Public health education in India is offered through Departments of Community Medicine in medical colleges open only for medical graduates. Medical colleges offer post graduate programs: MD Preventive and Social Medicine, MD Community Medicine, Diploma in Community Medicine and Diploma in Public Health. Thirty-nine medical colleges in India run a Diploma in Public Health program with an annual output of 140 diploma holders and six medical colleges offer a Diploma in Community Medicine to 13 candidates per year. These numbers are inadequate to cater to all the needs for public health professionals across the country.
