Abstract

This chapter provides background information on the two main subjects discussed in the book: network of marine protected areas (MPAs) and the South China Sea (SCS). It highlights criteria, steps and successful conditions for the development and management of a network of MPAs, in particular at the regional level. The chapter explains benefits and challenges for the development of the network of MPAs in the SCS. It reviews definitions of MPAs, and purposes for their establishment, their classification and rationales for the development of a network of MPAs. The chapter discusses the ecological, geopolitical and socio-economic characteristics of the SCS to point out the benefits of developing a network of MPAs in the region. It provides a context for looking at the topic from a more legal perspective, that is, the current status of international, regional and national laws relevant to the development of a network of MPAs.Keywords: international laws; national laws; network of marine protected areas (MPAs); socio-economic characteristics; South China Sea (SCS)
