YOUNG, DANIEL R., and SCHUMACHER, GARY M. Context Effects in Young Children's Sensitivity to the Importance Level of Prose Information. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1983, 54, 1446-1456. The purpose of these investigations was to determine the effects of different contexts on children's sensitivity to the importance level of story information. Experiment 1 was an investigation of the impact of memory and communication contexts on children's ability to recall according to importance level. A group of 32 4and 6-year-old children was presented with short stories in each context. Both age groups demonstrated sensitivity to importance level in their recalls, especially in the communication context. In Experiment 2 the impact of context on children's metacognitive awareness was investigated. Another group of 32 4and 6-year-old children was presented with short stories in memory and communication contexts. Contrary to previous research and theory, 6-year-olds demonstrated some metacognitive awareness of importance level. Further, developmental differences in the impact of the different contexts on metacognitive awareness were indicated. Differences between the current findings and previous investigations appear explicable in terms of context and task differences.
