Abstract
Contention induces ethical debate because it is often applied without consent. From a scientific point of view, the effectiveness of the restraint is not confirmed, it can be both safe and dangerous. Prevention of falls, agitation and aggressiveness, prevention of disturbance of other patients, incessant wanderings, the important need for care : dental care, the risk of opening a sutured wound and finally cognitive deterioration are the main indications identified in geriatrics. But all these so-called protection measures cannot do without a legal perspective on the freedom to come and go, as well as an ethical reflection of a joint, patient, family, caregiver journey. The debate must also be societal so that rights and duties are met, in a principle of shared responsibility.
