Abstract

This chapter describes a study that was motivated by the growing discussion of the challenges of English-medium instruction (EMI) confronting lecturers for whom English is a foreign language. The chapter focus on teachers' oral English use. While the other skills, such as knowledge of content and classroom management, must be regarded as equally important for coping with the communicative demands of functioning in an academic setting. It limits to participants' oral reflections on the challenges they face in lecturing and interacting with students in English during class discussions and supervision. The chapter focuses on the reflections of practicing non-native English-speaking university lecturers in relation to the increasing demand for them to lecture and teach applied natural science courses through the medium of English. The Test of Oral English Proficiency (TOEPAS) is a skills-based test that was developed for assessing whether university lecturers have sufficient oral proficiency for coping with the communicative demands of EMI at University of Copenhagen (UCPH).
