Abstract
Increasing urbanisation requires rethinking what liveable cities are about. Within the next decade, both climate change and the shortage of resources on water, energy and nutrients will have strong effects on the urban environment. The challenge is to create ‘healthy cities’. Bringing landscape to the cities can strongly contribute to making cities healthier, more resilient, and more vibrant, to accommodate all its citizens. The key to providing this new perspective is discovering how to create healthy cities in densely built areas, and strengthen the urban metabolism, while also addressing externalities, such as urban heat island effects, increased storm events, and sea level rise.
