Abstract
Historical development of the use of solar energy devices in Thailand is briefly reviewed. It has been recognized that due to the suitability of the location of the country (latitude 5°N − 22°N and longitude 96°E − 106°E), the potentiality of solar energy is prominent. The average total solar radiation measured throughout the country is about 16.7 × 106 joules/sq.m./day. In this paper, an overall view of energy consumption of the country and the estimation for the increasing rate of consumption are reported. Due to the impact of world energy crisis, the fundamental aims for the use of solar energy has been developed and are summarized. This paper reviews the activities and their progresses in research and development of the utilization of solar energy performed by institutes of technology, universities, government agencies and private sector. Furthermore, the estimation of the use and implementation of solar energy devices/programs within 5 years for economic and rural development of Thailand are presented.
