Abstract

Although there are studies on masculinity in Japan (Nicolae, 2014; Kumagai, 2013), there is a paucity of research on the sexual expressions and masculine identities among young men in the changing social and psychological context of modern Japanese culture. The objective was to investigate sexual and masculine expressions among young Japanese men in regard to the societal context, based on qualitative data. The group of Japanese nationals aged 20-28 participated in the project. The data is still being collected and the expected number of participants will approximately reach 50 in total. An online questionnaire has been developed to collect the data and it required approximately 25 minutes for completion. Findings & discussion • The findings supported the hypothesis that participants defined masculinity in line with societal types presented to them through social messages and they followed the socially determined factors due to the gender schema theory.
