Abstract

RECENT AMERICAN INDIAN INTEREST in Central America has led to a great deal of confusion over the relevance of Marxism to Indians, and Indians' position on Marxism. After a brief flirtation with the revolutionary government in Managua, some self-styled militants as well as traditional Indian leaders have targeted Nicaragua for international action, and the public debate is sometimes explicitly anti-Marxist. This has strained relations with some Latin American Indian groups, as well as international political activists, because it seems to adopt Washington's party line and diminish the even more desperate conditions of Indians in non-Marxist Latin nations such as Guatemala and Chile.
