Abstract
Riots and violence in the Islamic world have been viewed by the popular press and some scholars as reflecting an inherent violent quality of Islam as a religion. The culture history of the Judeo-Christian tradition demonstrates that Islam shows the same patterns of response to social stress as other sects of this tradition. Historical events have modified responses recently in others and Islam should be regarded in this context.
