Abstract

Over the past three centuries thoughtful observers have grappled with the ebbing vitality of Christian faith in Europe. In the 20th century European scholars have proposed various theories for analyzing and explaining the church's changing fortunes. Seven of these theories are reviewed here. These studies throw light on the current reality but stop short of constructive guidance in working for renewal. A missiological response is called for.
