Abstract

This paper focuses on modern consciousness through changes in the vampire image in modern fiction and film. During the twentieth century, vampires have evolved through three stages: early images show the vampire as a grotesque monster; later, the vampire becomes a fascinating and noble character; and most recently, the vampire has become emotional and introspective. An illustration of the historical change of consciousness that connects with these images is given, and a relationship between the most recent vampire image and consciousness is proposed. From this viewpoint, contemporary consciousness is characterized by a lack of the outside.
