Abstract

In November 1986, Australia's first national historical atlas was published under the title, Australians: a historical atlas. The volume is thematic in approach and contains a substantial amount of social history. Designed for a general, or lay, audience, its editors hope that it will act as a stimulus for the continued mapping of Australia's past. This paper looks at the history of the volume from its beginning in 1981 to its publication, setting it within its publishing context (it is part of a ten volume set), examining its development and approaches used (both editorially and cartographically) and evaluating the problems it encountered.
