Abstract

This study aimed to address shortcomings of current psychological models of forgiveness by investigating the impact of spiritual or religious belief systems on individual experience. Using a Grounded Theory approach, and semi-structured interviews, the experience of forgiveness in nine individuals’ lives was explored. Major categories from analysis of interview data gave rise to a transpersonal theory of forgiveness. The key determinant of this theory was experience of connection with something infinite and other than self. This influenced how individuals thought about and worked through forgiveness, resulting in personal and spiritual growth, and transformation.
