Abstract

Cotton wrapped on a reamer is used in the Netherlands for cleaning and drying root canals. Bacteriological cultures of specimens taken before and during endodontic treatment indicated that the cotton could be a source of contamination of the root canal by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Incorrect wrapping of the cotton on the reamer and inadequate immersion of the cotton-wrapped reamer in the glass bead sterilizer appeared to be the causes of contamination.
