Abstract
Contaminated ground may give rise to hazards and that implies a degree of risk which also involves a problem of definition. The attitudes of different states to contaminated ground and its redevelopment vary appreciably. The investigation of a site which is suspected of being contaminated differs somewhat from a routine site investigation. Samples of soils, ground water and gas producing material may be required. Various precautions may be necessary in doing this and operatives may have to wear protective clothing. Three case histories are given which involve site investigation. Two are fairly standard investigations of suspected contaminated land, the third involved some of the latest methods of contaminant detection. (A)
