Abstract

Infinity, that which is without limit, can strain consciousness. But the attempt to imagine everything can also bring forward the possibility of meaning. This paper takes up the question of consciousness and the emergence of being. As a story about birth, it owes allegiance to Kleinian accounts of early phantasy (Klein, 1957). For me, though, it is also a way of bringing together Bion's (1962, 1970) work on consciousness with commitments I have gained from the American school of relational analysis. This paper brings together clinical material and metaphysics in a somewhat playful way. In this way it remains loyal to the method of free association.
