Containers Used, Price Variation Between and Within Same Species of Ornamental Plants from Different Street Vendors in Morogoro Municipal, Tanzania

Abstract

Street vendors in Morogoro municipal do sell ornamental plants along the roadside of Nguzo street, Mwele street and along Mkuu wa Mkoa road. One may not give them much thought, but to them it is a lucrative venture that has seen their numbers, species of plants they grow and customers increase. The business requires; containers, fertile growing media, a site with good traffic, water or irrigation facilities and planting materials. Many people who buy flowers along the road may plan while others do not plan to buy, but they are attracted as they pass. By seeing the plants as they pass, they remember that they need to plant flowers or to beautify their homes, offices or other premises using ornamental plants. Therefore as in any other business, patience and passion is required for the roadside flower business. The task in this study was to visit different ornamental plants vendors in Morogoro streets and get information on containers used and prices of various ornamental plant species. Then, provide description on causes for price variation between different plant species and within same species and draw conclusion and recommendation from the observations.
