Abstract

Abstract Extract Contagious ecthyma (contagious pustular dermatitis, scabby mouth or orf) is widely known as a disease of domesticated sheep and goats, and as one transmissible to man. Wodzicki (1950) records the shooting of several thar with diseased feet and lips in 1943, and contagious ecthyma was confirmed at this laboratory. However, a search of the available literature reveals only two additional references, both Italian, to the occurrence of the condition in wild cloven-hoofed animals. Carrara (1959) records contagious ecthyma affecting one young chamois which was found dead, and Guarda (1959) describes (for the first time in Italy) the disease in chamois and steinbok. This communication records the occurrence of contagious ecthyma in thar (Hemitragus emlaicus Smith) in the South Island of New Zealand.
