Abstract

A healthy young woman gives birth to a beautiful baby. A couple of days later she suddenly starts shivering intensely. Her pulse races and she develops a high fever. Then she gets abdominal pain so agonizing she cannot bear the lightest touch on her skin. When the pain stops her family heaves a sigh of relief — she has turned the corner. But the doctor knows it is the sign of impending death. A classic case of childbed fever.
