Abstract
This preliminary study addresses the wear of contact lenses under an aviation protective mask that provides blown air constantly to the mask's lenses to prevent fogging. Two contact lens-wearing subjects wore the mask for 4 hours each, with the filter/blower running. Both subjects exhibited grade 2 injection (3 and 9 o'clock) and complained of dry eyes and excessive blinking during mask wear. Further study is required in this unique aviation environment, because the mask is designed to be worn under the pilot's helmet and helmet-mounted displays, rendering it essentially unremovable during the aircraft's mission.
