Abstract

A systematic investigation of the contact force and indentation between the carbon/epoxy symmetric cross-ply laminated composite plate and the rigid steel cylinder with spherical head was conducted by performing the static indentation test. The relations of the contact forces and indentations were processed by the method of least squares to establish the contact law between the laminated composite plate and the steel cylinder. The effects of the laminate thickness, ply orientations and the diameter of the indenters on the contact behavior were also investigated. The contact law can be mathematically modeled and incorporated into a finite element program to predict the impact response of the laminated composite plate.
