Abstract

The intraarticular contact areas and pressures across the normal human hip joint (1, 3, 8,11,12, 21) and the stress distributions and around the acetabulum (9, 10, 16, 17, 22) have been investigated experimentally and analytically by many researchers. The present analytical study emphasizes the acetabular side. Brown et al. (2) were the only researchers to conduct contact finite element stress analyses for study of stresses and contact pressures and areas in the hip joint. They conducted two-dimensional plane strain finite element contact stress analyses were conducted of the acetabulum and proximal femur, with emphasis on the femoral side.
