Abstract

Values for the critical surface tension of octadecylammonium bentonite and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bentonite were derived from measurements of the contact angle with aqueous solutions of ethanol and acetone. Depending on the preparation of the dry organoclay surfaces, γ c for toluene cast surfaces were 22–25 mN m −1 and for mechanically pressed disks were 19 to 21 mN m −1 with ethanol solutions. Acetone solutions gave γ c in the range of 23 to 26 mN m −1. Comparisons to established values of γ c for polymers containing organic groups similar to those in the organoclays are made.
