Abstract

Coagulation disturbances in a man bitten by the South African snake Dispholidus typus (boomslang) are reported. The patient developed consumption coagulopathy with secondary fibrinolysis. Beside the coagulation disturbances, hemolysis with hemoglobinuria and a transient impairment of the renal function were noted. Heparin treatment together with whole blood and plasma substitution resulted in an improvement of the condition. Administration of specific antivenom normalized completely all the coagulation factors.
